Social Auxiliary Worker
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
Established in 2014, The Safe House is a temporary safe care facility for abused women and children. The facility assists victims of abuse and violence by offering a safe place to stay where they can recover, consider their options, and begin to rebuild their lives. The Organisation also reaches out into the community to facilitate programmes of support and care giving together with local volunteers and partners.
HOURS
08H00 – 17H00 Monday to Friday
On call every third week.
Duties in line with minimum norms and standards as set out by The Department of Social Development:
Assist and support the social worker with the rendering of a social work service with regards to the care, support and protection and development of vulnerable individuals, groups, families and communities through the relevant Safe House programmes. Assist the Social Worker with attending to other matters that could result in, or stem from, social instability in any form. Continuous professional development. Perform administrative support functions in support of social workers as required of the job.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (not restricted to):
- Screen new referrals. Conduct preliminary assessments and intake services.
- Track medical and other appointments of clients.
- Provision of support services including accompanying clients to medical and other (i.e., court) appointments.
- Assist Social Worker with intervention and support services, in accordance with the SAW mandate.
- Ensure that unemployed clients are assisted with CV’s and applying for opportunities.
- Assist in coordination of logistical preparations for groupwork activity with clients.
- Internal and external awareness programmes, which includes initiating and facilitating community projects.
- Networking and partnering with other organisations.
- Keep statistics of clients up to date.
- Maintain file records.
- Complete prescribed process notes and documents related to interventions undertaken.
- Data capturing of client information.
- Cataloguing client intakes.
- Overseeing client calls.
- Liaising with birth partners and other relevant persons in cases where a pregnant client has decided to have the baby adopted or is pregnant while admitted to our facility.
- Offer monthly written input on tasks fulfilled.
- Assess trends on client information to adjust services where and when needed.
- Research and gather information of opportunities to meet gaps as discussed with social worker.
- In compiling summary on feedback and evaluation, consider and inform opportunities where gaps are identified.
- Conduct exit interviews with clients as to ensure that they are linked to support services in their area, and process necessary discharge documentation which includes exit summaries.
GENERAL SUNDRY:
- Attend staff meetings.
- Attend The Safe House Annual General Meeting and those of other organisations.
- Attend courses relevant to the work of The Safe House and for your growth and development and CPD.
- Be in possession of a valid driver’s license willing to transport clients as deemed necessary.
- Willing to conduct work outside of normal working hours, in assisting the social worker with necessary interventions.
- Attend any team building, strategic planning or other function deemed necessary by the organization.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 10 plus completion of the learnership to allow with the South African Council of Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as Social Auxiliary Worker.
- Registration with the SACSSP as Social Auxiliary Worker, a valid code B driving license.
- Or Grade 2: Grade 10 plus completion of the learnership to allow registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professionals (SACSSP) as Social Auxiliary Worker, Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions as a Social Auxiliary Worker.
COMPETENCIES:
Knowledge of information and knowledge management. Protocol and professional ethics. A basic understanding of the following: Human behaviour, relationship systems and social issues; South African Welfare context, policy, and practice of social auxiliary work. Basic knowledge of financial matters related to social auxiliary work. Good communication skills (written and verbal). Proven computer literacy. Information and knowledge management (keep precise records and compile accurate reports. Organising and planning skills. Presentation and facilitation skills. Report writing skills. Client orientation and customer focus skills.
