Accountable to: The Director

Main purpose of the position:
To execute the vision and mission of The Safe House and to uphold the VEP norms and standards in order to offer a holistic basket of services to our clients.

About The Safe House:
Established in 2014, The Safe House is a temporary safe care facility for abused women and children. The facility assists victims of abuse and violence by offering a safe place to stay where they can recover, consider their options, and begin to rebuild their lives. The Organisation also reaches out into the community to facilitate programs of support and care giving together with local volunteers and partners.


  • BA (SW) Hons
  • Valid registration with South African Council for Social Service Professionals (SACSSP)
  • Minimum 5 years working experience as a Social Worker post-graduation
  • Valid Police Clearance certificate
  • A valid code 08 driver’s license
  • Must be bilingual.
  • The successful applicant must show initiative, be proactive and be a crucial link in the team.

08H00 – 17H00 (Monday to Friday / on call afterhours as per roster

The Social Worker will be responsible for the implementation of all therapeutic counselling interventions, with the goal of ensuring the health, well-being and reintegration of all clients accessing services. The SW will be in a residential environment but must be able to work/network with various stakeholders to initiate, promote and implement a range of social services. This being inline with the norms and standards of the Victim Empowerment Programme.

  • Conduct initial interviews and screen all referrals
  • Provide trauma debriefing and counselling services to all victims of violence and abuse.
  • Conduct assessments of all clients accessing The Safe House, aimed at identifying appropriate and relevant interventions.
  • Develop Individual Development Plans (IDP) for all clients. In addition to therapeutic and educational group work sessions aimed at promoting healing and restoring their overall well-being.
  • Maintain accurate records of all case interventions, strong record keeping and administrative skills.
  • Facilitate appropriate referrals to various external organizations and Facilitate access to schools, medical care, job skills training, etc. Monitor medical appointments, transport to and from hospitals
  • Conduct awareness campaigns relating to the abuse of women and/or children, particularly sexual abuse, and domestic violence against women. Facilitate quarterly community outreach programs.
  • Provide counseling on individual basis with residents, counseling and networking with family members and other interested parties when necessary.
  • Schedule client activities and duties for the day, including that of their children- intervene when needed.
  • Supervising students throughout the year.
  • Administration work includes keeping stats up to date, maintaining file records, doing reports for various outside agencies when required also yearly reports for AGM’S
  • Attending networking meetings with various stakeholders, which include developing a resources and stakeholders database.
  • Assisting clients with their protection orders and other legal issues when necessary and accompanying them to Court.
  • Transporting clients when necessary to various locations
  • On call as per roster
  • Attend courses relevant to the work of The Safe House and for your growth and development and CPD.
  • Attend monthly supervision
  • Assist clients with grants, identity documents and birth certificates.
  • Managing weekend permission slips and reports to the committee when necessary
  • Plan which room (sleeping arrangements) resident will be in – and keep plan up to date
  • Telephone referrals – Counsel / advice / information
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Exit interviews with clients
  • Ensure that all residents receive toiletries bags on arrival
  • Ensure that all residents have an updated CV if unemployed
  • Meet with housemother and manager daily and liaison with other staff members when necessary


Knowledge of information and knowledge management; Protocol and professional ethics; An excellent understanding of the following: Human behaviour, relationship systems and social issues; South African Social Welfare context, policy and practice of developmental social welfare services; South African judicial system and the legislation governing and impacting of social work, laws and government regulations pertaining to Domestic Violence, Gender-based Violence, Child Protection, etc; Knowledge of financial matters related to social work; Excellent communication (written and verbal); Proven computer literacy; Information and Knowledge Management (Keep precise records and compile accurate reports); Organizing and planning skills; Presentation and facilitation skills; Report writing skills; Problem solving and analytical skills; Client orientation and customer focus skills.
